You Don't Need Certainty To Begin

You need curiosity, a few good questions, and a clearer way in.

Every collector started somewhere. The ones who collect with the most confidence are not those who knew the most at the beginning — they are those who learned to ask the right questions before, during, and after an acquisition.

This checklist is not a test. It is a thinking tool. Work through it before your first purchase, and return to it for every one that follows.

You do not need complete certainty to begin. You need curiosity and a trusted way to keep learning.

The Checklist

Do I understand the artist?

Follow their practice before you buy. Read about how they work, what ideas drive them, and how their work has developed. Confidence as a collector begins with genuine interest in the person making the work.

What exactly am I buying?

Is it a unique work or an edition? A screen-based piece or a physical object? Is there an NFT or a certificate of authenticity? Make sure you can answer this clearly before you commit.

How is it stored?

Where does the artwork file live — on a private server, a decentralized network, directly on a blockchain, or a physical device? Ask. The answer matters for how the work survives over time.

How will I experience it?

Think about display before you buy, not after. Ask the artist or gallery how the work is meant to be shown. A work that has no place to live in your home or life is a work that will not be enjoyed.

What about the future?

What rights do you have? Can the work be transferred or resold? Is there documentation you should keep? These are not complicated questions — but they are worth asking once, clearly, at the beginning.

A strong acquisition should feel clear, not opaque.
