We're excited to invite you to the opening reception of Terminal, a new exhibition by new media artist duo exonemo.

‍The exhibition centers on The Terminal, a sculptural and computational installation in which a rock hangs suspended above a computer that spends its days trying to crack its own code through brute-force computation. Fail, and the machine survives to try again. Succeed, and the rock drops, destroying it. It's a quiet, absurd little machine, working alone in the dark toward its own end.The piece recasts one of our oldest stories for a distinctly contemporary audience. Sisyphus pushed his boulder up the hill each day only to watch it roll back down; here, the boulder hangs still, and it's the machine that labors, endlessly, toward a victory that would destroy it. We've long been suspicious of our machines, and increasingly intimate with them too — they hold our secrets, absolve us, fail us, outlast us. The Terminal asks what it might mean to feel for one anyway.

‍exonemo, the duo behind the work, have spent three decades moving between the digital and the physical, working across installation, performance, and net art since Kensuke Sembo and Yae Akaiwa first began collaborating online in Japan in the mid-1990s, before relocating to New York.Their work has earned a Golden Nica at Prix Ars Electronica for The Road Movie (2006), and in 2019 the Whitney Museum of American Art commissioned 0 to 1 / 1 to 0, a web piece that overlays your browser with the changing sky over Manhattan.Terminal brings that same instinct for finding the strange and the human inside the machine to NowHere this fall.
