Club Members Experience Innovative "House of Private Collectors" at New MACAM Museum

The Lisbon collectors enjoyed an exclusive private visit to the city’s newest cultural destination, the MACAM Museum in Alcantara, on Wednesday, April 10th. This unique institution represents a fresh approach to experiencing art in Portugal's capital.

MACAM, which stands for "The House of Private Collectors," is the vision of Armando Martins, a dedicated collector who has been acquiring artworks since the 1970s. What distinguishes this museum is its innovative concept that seamlessly integrates art with hospitality – housing a museum, hotel, bar, and cafeteria under one roof.

The museum's self-sustainable model sets it apart from traditional cultural institutions. Without government funding, MACAM maintains financial independence through its hotel operations, where art flows beyond exhibition spaces into guest rooms and corridors, creating an immersive experience for visitors.

During the visit, the Lisbon Chapter was honored to meet Adelaide Ginga, the museum's director, who personally welcomed the group and shared insights into the project's philosophy. She explained how MACAM aims not only to showcase Martins' collection but also to eventually welcome and exhibit other private collections, truly embodying its mission as a "home for private collectors."

The permanent collection offered our members a profound glimpse into Portugal's rich history, with significant works illuminating crucial periods including the dictatorship era. The artistic narratives provided contextual understanding of the nation's complex past through creative expression.

After exploring the exhibitions, the Lisbon collectors gathered at the museum's cafeteria for coffee and conversation.
