Why We Collect - A conversation at MACAM Museum

On January 24th, we held a thought-provoking conversation at MACAM Museum around one of the art world’s most captivating questions: why do we collect art?

In collaboration with MACAM Museum and Sassy Women Society club, we brought together different voices to explore the complex bond between the collector, the artist, and the work itself.

Across the conversation, three ideas emerged that resonated deeply with the audience: collecting is often an act of care and curiosity before it is an investment; value in art is as much emotional and cultural as it is financial; and collectors, especially those starting their journey, play a key role in supporting artistic careers and creative futures.

We were grateful to hear perspectives from Adelaide Ginga, Director at MACAM Museum, on the responsibilities and vision behind institutional collecting; Nico Epstein, who shared insights on collecting with intention and confidence; and artist Fábio Colaço, whose experience as an artist represented in MACAM’s collection offered a personal take on what it means to be collected.

The conversation reflected something central to our mission: creating spaces where collectors can reflect, connect, and grow.
These discussions, rooted in curiosity and community, are part of how we support both existing and emerging collectors, beyond transactions, toward meaning and care.
