DISCOVER — CASEY REAS Processing: How Code Became a Medium for Artists
In 2001, artists Casey Reas and Ben Fry created Processing, an open-source programming environment designed to make working with code more accessible to artists and designers. What began as an experiment grew into a global community and played a major role in shaping the field we now call creative coding.
In this live conversation on the occasion of the 25-year anniversary of Processing, Casey Reas will take us through the story of Processing, from its beginnings and early experiments to the creation of the Processing Foundation, p5.js, and the community that has grown around it.
Through images, works, and archival material, we’ll explore not only what Processing is, but why it matters: how software can become an artistic medium, how tools can shape creative communities, and what 25 years of Processing can tell us about the evolution of digital art.
The session will be followed by an open Q&A with Casey.
Most people know Processing as a tool. Few have heard its story from the person who created it. Casey Reas opens his archive, sharing early sketches, works and material never shown publicly, to trace how a tool made for artists became part of the foundation of generative art.
The session closes with a live Q&A, giving members the chance to put their questions to Casey directly. A recording will be available to members afterwards.
