Biography

Alkan Avcioglu, born in Turkey in 1982, is a multidisciplinary artist widely regarded as a pioneer of what he calls 'AI post-photography,' a practice that uses artificial intelligence to question the boundary between photographic truth and synthetic image-making. His path to visual art was unconventional: he holds a master's degree in Film Studies and pursued doctoral research in communication sciences, and his early career spanned film criticism, DJing, journalism, and academia before he began working seriously with digital and AI-driven imagery, a practice he traces back to his first experiments with digital art in 1999. Based on the outskirts of Istanbul, Avcioglu draws on his background in narratology and visual storytelling to build bodies of work that read as speculative documentary: images and video that look like photographs of real events, objects, or places but are entirely machine-generated. Series such as 'Videodrome,' 'Simulacra,' and 'Manufactured Transcendence' explore themes of surveillance, media spectacle, and the erosion of a stable, verifiable reality in an image culture increasingly shaped by algorithms, often referencing media theorists such as Guy Debord. His work has been exhibited and sold in major art-world contexts including Art Basel, Paris Photo, and Christie's. In 2025, Avcioglu partnered with celebrated landscape photographer Edward Burtynsky on 'Hypertopographics,' a collaborative project that merges AI-generated imagery with Burtynsky's decades of large-scale industrial landscape photography, extending both artists' long-standing interest in how human systems reshape the planet's surface. Across his output, Alkan Avcioglu positions himself as an outsider artist and self-described 'dysfunctional polymath,' prolific in output and skeptical in outlook, using generative AI not to escape questions of truth and representation but to sharpen them for a post-truth media landscape.
