Chris Dorland

Biography

Chris Dorland is a New York-based artist working across painting, installation, and digital media, examining how images are shaped by the technical conditions of software, hardware, and networked systems. Rather than depicting large-scale digital and economic systems directly, Dorland is interested in their aftereffects, the pressure, distortion, and residue these pervasive but rarely visible structures leave behind, letting fragmentation, scale, erosion, and compression shape the image indirectly. His paintings, built with metallic polymer, pigment, gesso, and UV coating on canvas or linen, reintroduce physicality and bodily weight into digital source material, treating painting as a way to slow down and give material resistance to imagery that otherwise circulates frictionlessly on screens. Interfaces recur throughout his work not as neutral tools but as charged psychological architectures, rendered unstable and estranged rather than legible and trustworthy, exposing how supposedly smooth, intuitive design quietly organizes behavior and access. Dorland's practice deliberately introduces opacity and partial legibility, resisting the expectation that images resolve into instant comprehension, asking viewers to sit with uncertainty rather than consume images seamlessly. His work has been exhibited at institutions including the Queens Museum, the Neuberger Museum of Art, FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial, the New Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Digital Art, and is held in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Bronx Museum of the Arts. In 2024, Dorland received a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and his first institutional solo exhibition in Europe is being presented at the Museum gegenstandsfreier Kunst in Germany, alongside a forthcoming monograph, Chris Dorland: Future Ruins, by Robert Hobbs.
