Biography

Dmitri Cherniak is a Canadian generative artist and coder based in New York City who has become one of the most recognized figures in algorithmic and long-form generative art. Since minting his first NFT, titled 'I am but a vessel,' in 2019, Cherniak has built a substantial body of generative work, including notable series such as Ringers, The Eternal Pump, The Wrapture, and Light Years, each exploring different formal and conceptual approaches to code-based art. Ringers, released on Art Blocks, has become one of the most celebrated and highly valued generative art projects in the medium's history, using algorithmically determined string-wrapping patterns around pegs to produce a vast range of visually distinct outputs from a single underlying script. Cherniak considers automation itself to be his primary artistic medium, and despite the absence of direct human intervention in the generation of each individual piece, he aims to elicit genuine emotional responses from viewers through careful design of the underlying algorithm and its parameters. His work draws inspiration from a lineage of modernist and pioneering computer artists, including Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky, Vera Molnár, and Manolo Gamboa Naón, situating his practice within a longer history of geometric abstraction and systems-based art.
