Biography

Eduardo Kac, born on July 3, 1962, is a Brazilian-American artist internationally recognized as a pioneer of several distinct movements in contemporary art, including bio art, telepresence art, and telecommunications art. As early as the 1980s, well before the internet became a global cultural fixture, Kac was creating digital, holographic, and online artworks that anticipated many of the technological and philosophical questions later associated with networked culture. He is most widely known for coining and developing the concept of 'transgenic art,' a practice that uses genetic engineering to create living organisms as artworks, most famously demonstrated in his controversial 2000 piece GFP Bunny, in which Kac collaborated with scientists to introduce green fluorescent protein from a jellyfish into the genome of an albino rabbit, creating a rabbit named Alba that glowed green under blue light. The project sparked significant public debate around bioethics, the boundaries of art, and the implications of genetic manipulation, cementing Kac's reputation as one of the most provocative and intellectually rigorous artists working at the intersection of art, science, and technology. His broader body of work includes Genesis (1999), an installation exploring the relationship between biology, belief, and information technology, as well as extensive work in space poetry, aromapoetry, and telepresence robotics.
