Edward Burtynsky

Biography

Edward Burtynsky, born in 1955 of Ukrainian heritage in St. Catharines, Ontario, is widely regarded as one of Canada's most respected and internationally recognized photographers. He received his degree in photography and media studies from what is now Toronto Metropolitan University and went on to spend more than four decades documenting the scale and consequence of human industry on the natural world. Burtynsky's large-format photographs capture sweeping, often sublime views of quarries, mines, oil fields, shipbreaking yards, and manufacturing landscapes, transforming sites of extraction and industrial production into images that are simultaneously beautiful and unsettling. His work is frequently discussed in relation to concepts of the sublime and the Anthropocene, prompting viewers to reckon with the vast physical footprint of contemporary industrial civilization. Major bodies of work include Manufactured Landscapes, Oil, Water, and his ongoing project In the Wake of Progress, alongside numerous museum exhibitions worldwide. His photography has been the subject of a feature-length documentary film, Manufactured Landscapes, and his work is held in the collections of more than sixty major museums internationally, including the Museum of Modern Art and the National Gallery of Canada. Burtynsky continues to exhibit extensively, with recent major shows including The Great Acceleration at the International Center of Photography. He remains active across social media and public platforms, sharing exhibition updates, lectures, and new work with a broad global audience interested in the intersection of art, industry, and environmental change.
