Emily Xie

Biography

Emily Xie is a visual artist and engineer based in New York City who uses algorithms as her primary artistic medium to create organic textures and forms. Her practice explores how disparate materials and patterns come together to form unified visual compositions, along with the stories and histories that each individual material or pattern might carry into a piece. Drawing inspiration from physical media such as textiles, collage, and wallpaper, Xie reinterprets these traditionally tactile, handmade forms through a digital and computational lens, translating craft traditions into generative code. Her generative systems are built around a series of delicate tensions, navigating the space between chance and control, the organic and the systematic, and the abstract and the representational, resulting in work that feels simultaneously precise and unpredictable. Xie's engineering background informs the technical rigor of her generative systems, while her interest in textile and craft history grounds the work in a broader lineage of pattern-making and material culture. Her work has been collected and exhibited internationally at prominent venues including the Seattle NFT Museum, Kunsthalle Zürich, Unit London, the Armory Show, Bright Moments, and Art Blocks Curated Season 6, as well as public installations in Times Square and the StandardVision Artist Showcase throughout Los Angeles.
