Biography

Genesis Kai is a virtual artist and self-described 'chiral digital twin,' an AI-infused alter ego and persona created by Ming Shiu, a new media artist of mixed Korean and Hong Kong descent. Conceived as what Shiu terms a 'Nova Sapien,' Genesis Kai exists at the intersection of natural language processing AI and the tactile, embodied sensibility of her human creator, functioning as both an artistic character and an ongoing exploration of what authorship and identity mean when mediated through artificial intelligence. Through this virtual persona, Shiu examines themes of cultural reconnection, heritage, and belonging, using Genesis Kai as a vehicle to process questions of mixed identity and diasporic experience that might otherwise be difficult to address directly. Genesis Kai has been presented as a virtual artist showing AI-generated work at major art fairs, including exhibitions during Asia's leading contemporary art events, and has been discussed by outlets such as STIRworld and The HEAD Foundation as an early and thoughtful example of virtual, AI-augmented artistic personas. Shiu began her artistic career as a photographer before developing the multidisciplinary practice that led to Genesis Kai's creation, and the project has since expanded into physical exhibitions, printed works, and installations that bring the virtual character into tangible gallery spaces. Genesis Kai's work often explores themes of immortality, digital space, memory, and emotional darkness, framed through the lens of a character who exists between human creation and machine-generated expression.
