Biography

Giant Swan is the professional moniker of Travis Van Zanen, a Melbourne-based virtual reality sculptor, painter, and world-builder raised in the Australian bush. His practice is built around using full-body movement inside VR headsets to translate physical gesture directly into surreal, organic three-dimensional shapes and color, effectively treating virtual space as both canvas and stage. Before NFTs, Van Zanen struggled to exhibit his cutting-edge VR work because traditional physical galleries lacked the equipment needed to display it, and the emergence of blockchain-based art platforms gave his practice a global audience and a viable path to market for the first time. He emerged as a prominent figure in the crypto art movement around 2020, releasing high-demand pieces through platforms including SuperRare and Nifty Gateway, and became known as one of the first artists to place a three-dimensional object fully on-chain, a technically significant contribution to the early NFT community. His surreal iconography blends nature, human emotion, and atmospheric, dreamlike world-building, with pieces that emphasize fluid movement and physical imperfection translated into digital form. Giant Swan has collaborated on major projects including designing immersive visuals for musician Matteo Milleri's Anyma project, and has been featured in high-profile digital art showcases including events associated with Rolling Stone. He continues to explore virtual reality as an emerging artistic medium, pushing the technical and expressive boundaries of what VR-based sculpture and painting can achieve within both the crypto art and broader contemporary art worlds.
