Giselle Beiguelman

Biography

Giselle Beiguelman is a Brazilian artist and professor at FAU-USP, the School of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of São Paulo, whose practice develops at the intersection of art, technology, and memory. Her work examines regimes of visibility and erasure that shape both digital and physical worlds, exposing layers of disappearance embedded in history and culture, from censored archives to bodies and knowledge made invisible by dominant narratives. Working with AI since 2021, Beiguelman treats the technology not as a neutral tool but as a system that must be actively negotiated with, confronting biased datasets and platform filters that reflect and reinforce hegemonic thought, ageism, racism, and misogyny. Her exhibition Poisonous, Noxious and Suspicious, presented at Centro Cultural Fiesp in São Paulo, used fictional AI-generated portraits and video to recover the stories of women and plants historically silenced, banned, or demonized, from women scientists erased from botanical history to plants associated with witchcraft, ritual, and colonial fear. A related exhibition, Naturezas Desviantes, transformed the Museu de Arte do Rio Grande do Sul with a related body of work, while her earlier Botânica Tirânica examined how botanical naming itself encodes societal prejudice. Beiguelman researches born-digital archive preservation and coordinates the FAPESP Thematic Project Digital Archives and Research, and is the author of books including Políticas da imagem and Memória da amnesia. Her artistic work is held in museum collections including ZKM in Germany, the Jewish Museum Berlin, MAC-USP, and the Pinacoteca de São Paulo.
