Korean media artist who reinterprets traditional East Asian motifs through projection mapping, interactive media, light and sound.
Biography
Hyegyung Kim (김혜경) is a media and digital artist based in Seoul. She was born in Seoul in 1974 and holds an MFA in Digital Media Design from Hongik University (2011). She reinterprets traditional Korean and East Asian visual motifs through digital media art. Her work transforms symbols of auspiciousness, fortune, prosperity and longevity into contemporary compositions made with digital technology. Porcelain, antique wooden furniture, landscape painting and temple imagery become expanded environments through projection mapping, interactive media, light and sound. Her 2016 installation Media Bowha (寶貨, A Treasure) was shown at Gallery Korea of the Korean Cultural Center New York, in a space modeled on the traditional Korean sarangbang reception room. She has also taken part in projects including the 2017 Cheongju International Craft Biennale and a 2020 media art event of the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, and received the 2016 Red Dot Design Award. She has worked with NFTs since 2021. Her MediaFacade collection on Ethereum includes works such as Auspicious Sign (吉祥) and Enjoy with People at Changdeok Palace, drawing on Korean, Chinese and Japanese art history.
