Biography

Jan Robert Leegte (born 1973) is a Dutch artist based in Amsterdam who has been creating art on and for the internet since the 1990s, making him one of the pioneering figures of the early net art movement. His work investigates the sculptural materiality of online interfaces, browser windows, and computer programs, treating digital aesthetic elements such as scroll bars, buttons, and windows as sculptural forms in their own right. Beginning in 2002, Leegte extended this inquiry into physical gallery spaces, translating digital materials into prints, sculptures, installations, drawings, and projections that bridge the online and offline art worlds. His practice consistently draws connections between historical art movements and the emerging aesthetics of the digital avant-garde, reframing familiar art-historical ideas through the lens of computer interfaces and networked culture. Leegte's work has been exhibited at major international institutions including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Ludwig Museum, the Whitechapel Gallery in London, the Kröller-Müller Museum, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. He is represented by Upstream Gallery in Amsterdam, which continues to show his ongoing exploration of the intersection between digital culture and physical art forms. Across three decades of practice, Leegte has remained a key voice examining how the visual language of computing shapes contemporary art and how net-native aesthetics can be translated into durable physical and immersive works.
