Biography

Shiqing "Licia" He (born 1992) is a Chinese generative artist and human-computer interaction researcher based in London who bridges digital code and physical media through robotics and pen plotters. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Studio Art and Computer Science from Union College, where she conducted independent research on natural color production as a Thomas J. Watson Fellow, and later earned a Ph.D. in Information Science from the University of Michigan specializing in human-computer interaction. He began exploring generative art in 2018, drawn to the intersection of art and technology after years spent studying multiple disciplines and living across different regions and cultures. Fascinated by the possibilities of human-machine collaboration, she combines generative algorithms with robotic plotting systems, using physical drawing machines to bridge her digital compositions with tactile, hand-finished paintings. Before dedicating herself fully to art, He served as an assistant professor in the Department of Visualization at Texas A&M University, where she founded and led the Generative Craft Lab, a research group focused on artistic practices supported by technological innovation. Her cross-disciplinary work often draws on her multicultural upbringing and experiences, exploring the interplay between machine-generated chaos and human-imposed harmony. He is now a full-time artist in London, continuing to investigate how programming, robotics, and traditional studio craft can be woven together to produce thought-provoking, technically rigorous artworks.
