Biography

Mario Klingemann is a German artist widely recognized as one of the earliest and most influential figures in the AI art movement, working under the alias Quasimondo since long before generative art entered the mainstream art world. Since 2015 he has focused on building his own datasets and neural network feedback systems rather than relying on off-the-shelf commercial tools, giving his practice a distinctly personal and experimental character. This hands-on approach to machine learning has allowed him to explore how algorithms perceive, distort, and reconstruct imagery in ways that blur the line between human authorship and machine autonomy. Before turning to artificial intelligence, Klingemann worked extensively with code-based generative systems, producing early digital series such as Cityscapes and Burning Liquid Sky. His transition into neural network art positioned him at the intersection of computer science and contemporary art, and his experimental, often glitch-inflected aesthetic has become widely influential among a generation of AI artists. Klingemann's work has been exhibited at major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Centre Pompidou, ZKM Karlsruhe, Ars Electronica, and Sotheby's, reflecting both the critical and commercial recognition his practice has earned. In 2018 he was awarded the Lumen Prize Gold Award for his piece 'The Butcher's Son,' a milestone that helped bring AI-generated art into broader public and institutional awareness.
