Biography

Neïl Beloufa is a French-Algerian artist born in 1985 in Paris, where he continues to live and work, though his practice has taken him to exhibition spaces around the world. Working across video, sculpture, installation, textiles, and photography, Beloufa creates multi-layered environments that blur the line between fiction and documentary, often incorporating interactive or game-like elements that implicate viewers in the construction of meaning. His work frequently interrogates power dynamics, geopolitics, urbanism, and the mediated nature of contemporary reality, using humor and formal experimentation to avoid didacticism while still engaging serious social questions. Beloufa has built an international reputation through major institutional exhibitions, including a comprehensive survey at Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan retracing his career through film and video work, as well as presentations at the Venice Biennale and numerous solo shows in Europe and the United States. He is represented by galleries including François Ghebaly in Los Angeles and kamel mennour in Paris and London, and his exhibition 'Call and Response' at François Ghebaly explored obscured imagery mined from social media platforms. Frequently cited among the most significant artists of his generation, Beloufa treats video not simply as a documentary tool but as sculptural material in its own right, often embedding screens within architectural installations that viewers must physically navigate.
