A Franco-Canadian digital artist using early computer graphics to create pixelated forms, moiré patterns, and architectural studies.
Nicolas Sassoon is a Franco-Canadian artist born in 1981 in Marseille, France, whose practice explores the material and aesthetic tensions between the pixel and the screen. Working with early computer graphics techniques and imaging processes, he creates richly detailed digital animations built from pixelated forms, figures, moiré patterns, and architectural studies, often evoking the textures of early digital media, video games, and screen technologies while pushing them into hypnotic, immersive new forms. After completing his art education in France with a Master's degree in 2007, Sassoon relocated to Vancouver, Canada, and has since split his time between Canada and France, including periods based in Montreal, Vancouver, and Biarritz. Sassoon is a founding member of the artist collective W-A-L-L-P-A-P-E-R-S, and his individual and collaborative work has been exhibited at major institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art and Eyebeam in New York. His moiré-based animations, often presented as looping GIFs or generative software works, have made him a recognizable figure within net art and digital art communities, admired for finding new expressive potential in the constraints of low-resolution, early digital aesthetics. Across his body of work, Sassoon treats the pixel not as a technical limitation but as a compositional and material unit in its own right, building rhythmic, textured visual fields that reference landscape, architecture, and abstract pattern simultaneously.
