ORLAN is a French multimedia artist widely recognized as one of the most significant and provocative figures in contemporary performance and body art. Working across sculpture, photography, performance, video, video games, augmented reality, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence, she has spent decades using her own body as both subject and material, challenging fixed ideas about identity, beauty, and the boundaries of the physical self. ORLAN rose to international prominence in the early to mid-1990s with a series of surgical performances that she termed 'Carnal Art,' in which she underwent cosmetic surgeries broadcast live as performance pieces, deliberately combining features associated with different historical ideals of feminine beauty rather than pursuing conventional attractiveness. These works positioned surgery itself as an artistic medium and sparked extensive debate about bodily autonomy, spectacle, and the construction of identity, cementing her reputation as a pioneer willing to use extreme, direct engagement with her own body to interrogate cultural norms.
