Rainer Hosch

Biography

Rainer Hosch is a photographer and portrait artist born in 1970 in Vienna, Austria. His father, Heinz, was a well-known photojournalist who gave Rainer his first camera at age eight, sparking an early interest in image-making. Hosch began his career documenting Vienna's underground music scene, capturing definitive early portraits of Austrian pop icon Falco in the mid-1990s. He relocated to New York in the late 1990s, later settling in Los Angeles, and built an international career shooting for magazines including GQ, Interview, Wired, Esquire, i-D, and Details. Known for his ability to bring out charisma and character in both famous and unknown subjects alike, Hosch has photographed a wide range of cultural figures, including George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lopez, Iggy Pop, and Kim Kardashian, as well as advertising campaigns for major brands. In recent years, Hosch has extended his portrait practice into the NFT space, releasing digital collections and portrait series of prominent figures within crypto and web3 culture, and becoming an active participant in NFT community events and collaborations with other digital artists. His exhibitions have included solo shows of previously unreleased archival photographs of pop-culture figures, alongside gallery presentations of black-and-white portrait and street photography. Represented by Walter Schupfer Management, Hosch continues to move between traditional editorial and celebrity photography and newer blockchain-based art platforms, bridging analog portraiture traditions with digital collecting culture.
