Biography

Rebecca Allen is an American artist who has spent more than four decades exploring the intersection of art, technology, and human perception. Working across experimental video, large-scale performance, live simulation, and virtual and augmented reality, she has consistently used emerging technology as an artistic medium rather than simply a tool, focusing on the aesthetics of motion and the study of behavior. Her work frequently investigates questions of gender, identity, and the changing nature of embodiment in an increasingly technological world, often placing digitally rendered human figures at the center of virtual space well before such imagery became commonplace. Allen has collaborated with major musicians and artists, including Kraftwerk, Peter Gabriel, and Nam June Paik, contributing groundbreaking computer-animated visuals and performances during the early years of digital art. Her work is held in major permanent collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Centre Georges Pompidou, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and has been featured in high-profile surveys of art and technology such as Tate Modern's 'Electric Dreams.' Allen holds degrees from the Rhode Island School of Design and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and she continues to move fluidly between artistic practice and technological research, using insights from each to inform the other. She remains recognized as one of the foundational figures in computer-based and digital performance art.
