Biography

Robbie Barrat is a Dublin-born artist and programmer, raised in West Virginia, who became one of the earliest and most influential figures in AI-generated art. As a teenager, he began working at NVIDIA's research laboratory in California, immersing himself in machine learning and generative adversarial networks (GANs) before most of the art world had even encountered the technology. Barrat later moved to New York to pursue a collaborative art project with artist Ronan Barrot, further developing his hybrid practice at the intersection of code and traditional art history. Rather than approaching digital art through a formal design education, Barrat has drawn heavily on the study of fine art and master painting techniques, translating classical methods of composition and mark-making into algorithmic and machine-learning processes. He is particularly known for embracing the unpredictable, glitch-like imagery that emerges when a GAN misinterprets its training data, treating these errors as a source of creative discovery rather than a flaw to be corrected. Barrat's work extends beyond the gallery into fashion, where he has collaborated with major brands including Balenciaga and Acne Studios, training generative models on the companies' historical garment data to produce entirely new, AI-generated patterns and silhouettes. His art has been exhibited internationally at prestigious venues such as the Centre Pompidou, Ars Electronica, Galerie Zurcher, L'Avant Galerie Vossen, and Kate Vass Gallery, including the landmark 2019 exhibition Automat und Mensch. Barrat is also known within blockchain art communities under names including Videodrome, reflecting his early and continued engagement with crypto and NFT-based art platforms. Through his work, Barrat has helped shape public understanding of what AI-generated art can be, positioning machine learning not simply as a tool for automation but as a genuine creative collaborator capable of producing unexpected and evocative visual results.
