Biography

Sarah Meyohas is a conceptual artist and technologist, born in 1991 in New York, whose interdisciplinary practice spans photography, film, cryptocurrency, and virtual reality. She first gained widespread recognition in February 2015 when she launched Bitchcoin, one of the earliest social tokens and crypto artworks, a cryptocurrency backed by her own physical artwork years before the term 'NFT' entered common usage. This pioneering gesture positioned Meyohas as an early and influential figure at the intersection of art, finance, and blockchain technology, exploring questions of value, speculation, and authorship in the emerging digital economy. Her ambitious 2017 film Cloud of Petals further cemented her reputation, documenting a monthlong performance in which sixteen workers meticulously photographed and cataloged roughly one hundred thousand individual rose petals inside the former Bell Labs building in New Jersey, using the resulting dataset to train a machine-learning model capable of generating synthetic flower imagery. The project, and the Bitchcoin work it is tied to, was later acquired by the Centre Pompidou in Paris, cementing Meyohas's place within major institutional collections. Her work has been exhibited at prominent venues including the New Museum, the Barbican, MCAM, and 303 Gallery, and she has been recognized on Forbes' 30 Under 30 list for her contributions to art and technology. Meyohas continues to investigate systems of value, control, and image production through emerging technologies, often blurring the boundary between financial instruments and fine art objects.
