Biography

Silvio Wolf was born in 1952 in Milan and works in Milan and New York. He studied philosophy and psychology in Italy, then photography and visual arts at the London College of Printing, where he received a Higher Diploma in Advanced Photography. He teaches photography at the European Institute of Design in Milan and is a visiting professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York. His practice extends photography into installation, using light, sound, projection and moving image. Recurring themes are light, time, absence and the threshold. Major bodies of work include Architectures (1981 to 2008), Icons of Light (1993 to 2007), Horizons (2006 to 2014), Mirror Thresholds (2006 to 2014), Meditations (2009 to 2016) and Shivah (2014). Great Western Wall (1987) was his first site specific installation. He took part in Documenta 8 in Kassel in 1987 and showed Light Wave at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Civico Museo d'Arte Contemporanea in Milan, the Institut Valencia d'Art Modern and the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal. At Paris Photo 2026 he shows work for the first time with Glenda Cinquegrana Art Consulting in the Digital Sector: fragments of burnt film that he digitised and printed at large scale, turning them into landscape like abstractions.
