Biography

Travis LeRoy Southworth, born in 1979 in Honolulu, Hawaii, is an American conceptual artist based in New York City whose digital practice has been active since the late 1990s. He holds a BFA from the University of Arizona (2004) and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2007), and has spent over two decades working across installation, photography, code, and digital media. Southworth's art practice centers on the use of portrait remnants, fragments and residues of human likeness, which he reassembles into new, fictional images that aim to express the complexity of contemporary identity and the disconnect between the body and the people surrounding it. His soft, sketch-like aesthetic gives his fictional portraits an implied sense of movement, deliberately avoiding hard, definitive lines in favor of ambiguity and formal openness. Southworth's conceptual concerns extend to the aesthetics of labor and perception in the digital age, informed in part by his parallel career as a senior image retoucher for major fashion and advertising brands in New York City, a role that has shaped his technical fluency with digital image manipulation. His work sits at the intersection of Post-Internet art and more traditional conceptual portraiture, and has been exhibited at galleries including Below Grand and Expanded.Art, as well as released through platforms like Art Blocks. Across series such as 'Liminals,' 'The Revenant,' and 'Electrified Visions of Perfection,' Southworth continues to interrogate how digital tools reshape our understanding of the self and its representation.
