Tyler Hobbs

Biography

Tyler Hobbs is a visual artist based in Austin, Texas, whose work explores the intersection of computational aesthetics, nature, and technology. Combining a background in computer science from the University of Texas at Austin with a deeply considered artistic practice, Hobbs uses algorithms, plotters, and paint to investigate how biases embedded in computer hardware and software shape digital visual experience and its relationship to organic forms found in the natural world. He is best known as the creator of Fidenza, one of the most celebrated and highly valued generative art collections in the history of the medium, released through Art Blocks and recognized for its flowing, organic ribbon-like compositions that demonstrate the expressive potential of code-based art. Hobbs draws inspiration from artists such as Sol LeWitt and Agnes Martin, incorporating their mathematically minded compositional structures and meticulous, rule-based processes into his own work while allowing controlled randomness to introduce vitality and unpredictability into each generated piece. His practice extends beyond purely digital output into physical paintings and plotter drawings, translating algorithmic systems into tactile, large-scale works on canvas and paper. Hobbs has held numerous solo exhibitions, including Progress at Galeria Dos Topos in Mexico, Incomplete Control at Bright Moments Gallery in New York, and QQL: Analogs at Pace Gallery, reflecting his crossover appeal between the generative art community and traditional fine art institutions. He is also the creator of QQL, a collaborative generative art project developed with fellow artist Dandelion Wist that allows collectors to actively participate in the curation and creative process of the artwork itself. Through his rigorous technical approach and deep engagement with the history of minimalist and process-based art, Hobbs has become one of the most influential and widely respected figures in contemporary generative art.
