Zancan

A Bordeaux-based former oil painter turned programmer, pioneering generative naturalism in code-based art.

Generative art, plotter art, creative coding

Biography

Michaël Zancan is a French artist and programmer based in Bordeaux who came to generative art after an earlier career as an oil painter. That background in traditional painting continues to inform his code-based practice, which he uses to build dense, intertwining natural forms rather than the minimal or rigid geometries often associated with algorithmic art. Zancan writes his own mathematical formulas to generate plottable patterns whose complexity mirrors the density and unpredictability of organic growth, positioning him as a trendsetter within the field of generative naturalism. His work builds on and expands the aesthetic groundwork laid by early computer art pioneers such as Grace C. Hertlein, pushing the genre toward richer, more layered, and more painterly compositions. Working primarily with plotted drawings, Zancan bridges the physical and the digital, translating algorithmically generated imagery into tangible ink-on-paper works that retain the tactile qualities of hand-drawn art despite their computational origin. His art has been showcased and collected by major institutions and platforms including Christie's, Art Basel Paris, Verse Works, Cortesi Verso, and TGAM, reflecting the growing recognition of generative and plotter-based art within both the traditional and digital art markets. Zancan continues to refine his systems-based approach, treating code as a tool for cultivating complexity rather than simplification, and his ongoing body of work stands as a distinctive contribution to the lineage of generative art that stretches back to its earliest computational pioneers.
