AND PRAXIS brings together 35 artists and duos who shaped new media art: telematic art, interactive art, artificial life, bioart, virtual reality and generative art. All are contributors to The Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of New Media Art, Volume II: Artists and Practice. The exhibition opens on 22 October 2026 at 7 pm at the NEWART Centre in Reus (Tarragona), with free admission.
There is no curatorial selection. Each artist chose one work that represents their practice, some remastered for the show, in a plug-and-play format that can be shared through the cloud. The works are shown together in an immersive environment of screens, and each one can also be viewed on its own.
Participating artists: Bill Seaman, Catherine Elwes, Chris Speed, Christa Sommerer & Laurent Mignonneau, Christopher Henschke, Claudia Hart, Donna Cox, Ernest Edmonds, Frederik de Wilde, George Legrady, Gina Czarnecki, Jane Grant, Jane Prophet, Jeffrey Shaw, Jill Scott, Jon McCormack, Kurt Hentschläger, Laura Beloff, Mari Velonaki, Mark Cypher, Mike Phillips, Monika Fleischmann & Wolfgang Strauß, Olga Kisseleva, Paul Brown, Paul Sermon, Paul Thomas, Rachel Clarke, Sally Jane Norman, Simon Biggs, Stanza, Stelarc, Susan Collins, Teresa Wennberg, Victoria Vesna and William Latham.
Many of these works depend on hardware, software and formats that are becoming obsolete. AND PRAXIS is also the public part of a living archive project to identify, document and conserve them.
The exhibition was initiated by Professor Paul Thomas, editor of the encyclopedia, with Vicente Matallana and Jaime de los Ríos, and is dedicated to the memory of Vicente Matallana.
On opening day, the symposium Preserving the Pioneers, presented by Pau Alsina (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya), starts at 4.30 pm, alongside Paul Sermon's live telematic performance Homo Telematicus. AND PRAXIS runs alongside the exhibition Hello World!
