Frieze Connect invites members of 100 collectors for a private visit to We Have Never Been Powerless, presented by BLEUR in collaboration with Harlesden High Street.

‍

Bringing together Sam Wootton, Ken Nwadiogbu, Melissa Newbery Welcome, Savannah Harris and PJ Harper, the exhibition explores ideas of resistance, identity, visibility and resilience through painting, sculpture and installation. Rather than approaching resistance as something loud or performative, the exhibition considers the quieter forms of power found in endurance, holding space and continuing to create within structures not necessarily designed to accommodate you.

Across the exhibition, these ideas unfold through a range of distinct practices. Sam Wootton explores masculinity, identity and youth culture through a multidisciplinary practice spanning painting, drawing and installation, while Ken Nwadiogbu’s socially engaged work examines identity, migration and visibility. Melissa Newbery Welcome considers locality, communal autonomy and the relationship between individual experience and the environments we inhabit, while Savannah Harris draws on geological processes, buried histories and her Caribbean and Cuban heritage to create richly layered paintings. PJ Harper’s figurative sculptures draw on Greek mythology, Afrofuturism and personal heritage to explore Black identity, desire, memory and transformation.

The visit offers an opportunity to explore the exhibition in an intimate setting and gain further insight into the artists and the ideas connecting their practices.
