Inside MAAT: A Private Visit to Pedro Cabrita Reis and Joana Vasconcelos in Lisbon

On 26 October, 100 Collectors members were welcomed into MAAT in Lisbon for a private guided tour of two major exhibitions — an afternoon that offered far more than a standard museum visit.

There are visits, and then there are visits that change the way you see an artist's work. Our afternoon at MAAT — the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology on the banks of the Tagus — fell firmly into the second category.

We began with 'Without Sorrow of Heart', the new solo exhibition by Pedro Cabrita Reis. One of the most significant figures in contemporary Portuguese art, Cabrita Reis has long worked with light, structure, and the poetic weight of industrial materials. Seeing the show with a private guide meant moving through the work slowly, with context and conversation — understanding decisions that would have remained invisible to the unaccompanied eye.
‍

From there, we moved into VENUS — Valentino Garavani Through the Eyes of Joana Vasconcelos, an exhibition that brings together two of the most distinctive creative sensibilities of our time. Joana Vasconcelos, herself one of Portugal's most internationally celebrated artists, has reimagined the Valentino archive through her own unmistakable visual language. The result is an encounter between fashion, sculpture, and cultural identity that rewards close, informed looking — exactly the kind of looking our guided access made possible.
‍

That access is not incidental. It is what 100 Collectors is built around. MAAT is one of the most important contemporary art institutions in southern Europe, and being able to walk through two of its major shows with expert guidance — uncovering layers of meaning and detail that a solo visit rarely reveals — is precisely the kind of experience we work to make available to our members.

This is the access 100 Collectors opens up: private entry, informed perspective, and the time to look properly. If you are not yet a member, we would be glad to tell you more.
