A Romanian artist and programmer based in Lisbon exploring machine observation and technology's power structures through generative simulations.
Cezar Mocan is a Romanian artist and computer programmer, born in 1993, who lives and works in Lisbon, Portugal, after spending several years based in Brooklyn, New York. He holds an M.P.S. in New Media Art from New York University's Interactive Telecommunications Program, where he developed a practice centered on generative systems and real-time simulation. Mocan's work investigates the power structures that shape society's relationship with technology, using narrative generative systems to build simulations that reveal machine observation as a form of worldmaking. His practice often explores the interplay between natural landscapes and built infrastructure, treating code as a lens through which to examine surveillance, control, and the ways technological systems construct and interpret the world around them. Beyond screen-based generative work, Mocan has also produced series of plotted drawings, translating algorithmic output into physical works through pen plotters as part of long-running daily-practice projects. His work has been exhibited in New York, Berlin, and Lisbon, and has been featured by institutions and platforms including CURRENTS New Media, Onkaos, and Arab Bank Switzerland's art program. Mocan continues to develop projects at the intersection of art, technology, and critical theory, using his technical background as a programmer to interrogate the systems of observation and infrastructure that increasingly define contemporary life.
