A Madrid-born new media artist working across photography, video, sculpture, and installation to explore data and technology.
Daniel Canogar, born in Madrid in 1964 to a Spanish father and an American mother, is a multidisciplinary artist whose life and career have long bridged Spain and the United States. He studied Image Sciences at Madrid's Complutense University, graduating in 1987, before earning a Master's degree from New York University and the International Center of Photography in 1990. Canogar's practice spans photography, video, sculpture, and large-scale installation, with much of his recent work taking the form of sculptural LED installations that incorporate real-time data streams, transforming abstract information into dynamic, luminous form. Works such as 'Billow,' which pulls the most popular search terms from Google in real time and renders them as flowing, colorful animations, exemplify his ongoing interest in visualizing the invisible infrastructures of digital life. Canogar has created numerous permanent public art installations using LED screens and technology-driven sculpture, and his work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including bitforms gallery in New York, the Blanton Museum of Art, and public commissions such as those in Times Square. Since 2010, he has also served as an associate professor at IE University's School of Architecture and Design, sharing his expertise in new media art with the next generation of artists and designers. Working today between studios in Los Angeles and Madrid, Canogar continues to investigate how sculpture, software, and data can be woven together, treating technology as both subject and material in a practice that seeks, in his words, to find synchronous connections between data, sculpture, and the history of art.
