Generative art, on-chain art, code-based art

Biography

Erick Calderon, known professionally as Snowfro, is a Mexico City-born, Houston-based entrepreneur, artist, and technology enthusiast who became one of the most influential figures in generative and blockchain-based art. Before entering the crypto art world, Calderon ran a tile business, an unlikely background for someone who would go on to reshape how algorithmic art is created, distributed, and collected on the blockchain. In 2020, he founded Art Blocks, a groundbreaking platform that allows artists to publish generative art scripts directly on the Ethereum blockchain, with each unique output minted on demand at the moment of purchase rather than pre-rendered in advance. This on-demand generative model represented a significant innovation in NFT art, giving collectors a genuine element of chance and giving artists a powerful new medium for programmable creativity. Calderon released his own generative artwork, Chromie Squiggles, as the very first project on Art Blocks, and the collection quickly became one of the most iconic and widely recognized series in the history of NFT art, often considered a symbolic entry point into the Art Blocks ecosystem. Under his leadership, Art Blocks grew into one of the most important platforms in the generative art movement, hosting work from numerous acclaimed digital artists and helping legitimize code-based art within both the crypto community and traditional art institutions. Calderon has been featured extensively in art and technology media, including ARTnews, Right Click Save, and numerous podcasts and interviews discussing the technical and philosophical foundations of generative on-chain art. His work and platform have been recognized by institutions such as the Toledo Museum of Art and Rice University's Moody Center for the Arts, cementing his role as a foundational figure bridging generative coding, blockchain technology, and contemporary art.
