British computer art pioneer who created AARON, the earliest AI program for autonomous artmaking.
Harold Cohen (1928-2016) was a British-born artist and computer art pioneer whose innovations at the forefront of technology fundamentally changed the trajectory of computer-generated art. Beginning in the early 1970s, Cohen developed AARON, a largely autonomous art-making computer program widely recognized as the earliest artificial intelligence system created specifically for making art, decades before AI art entered mainstream conversation. Over more than four decades of continuous development, Cohen refined AARON's capabilities from simple turtle-graphics drawing machines into increasingly sophisticated systems capable of producing paintings with genuine aesthetic coherence, all without direct human input guiding each individual work. Cohen wrote extensively about AARON, engaging deeply with the philosophical and technical questions that a computer-based artistic system raised both within the computing and fine art worlds. His practice demonstrated as early as 1973 what much of the art world would not begin to reckon with until decades later: that a machine could produce work with real aesthetic coherence and internal logic, independent of moment-to-moment human intervention. At Art Basel's Zero 10 sector in Basel in 2026, presented by Gazelli Art House, AARON ran live throughout the fair, generating autonomous drawings continuously through three historic programs: Reconstruction of Mazes, KCAT AARON, and Gijon AARON. Cohen's legacy has been formally recognized by major institutions, with the Whitney Museum acquiring AARON's code in 2024 and M+ in Hong Kong acquiring historic AARON drawings the same year.
