Jin Meyerson

Biography

Jin Meyerson is a painter and multimedia artist based in Seoul, South Korea, whose practice moves fluidly between painting, digital imaging software, and video in an ongoing cycle: paintings become data, data becomes video, and video loops back into new paintings. Born in Incheon and adopted by an American family as a young child, Meyerson was raised in Minnesota and later returned to live and work in Korea, a personal history of displacement and searching that deeply informs his work's recurring themes of memory, inheritance, and belonging. He began engaging with early imaging software in the mid-1990s, using digital fragmentation and distortion as a way to process both American popular imagery and, later, his own family history, at a time when this approach was often dismissed by fellow painters as inauthentic. Meyerson operates what he describes as two studios, a physical painting studio and a digital studio where he and collaborators develop new imaging and video processes, including a technique of layering mirrored reflections of painting data to generate looping, vortex-like video works. His series Descendant, shown at Esther Schipper in Berlin and the Ulsan City Museum, exemplifies this practice, weaving analog and digital space together around questions of ancestry and connection. Meyerson's recent work has been exhibited at the Korean Cultural Center in Paris and Perrotin Los Angeles, and continues to draw on the Korean concept of Han, a cultural tone of loss, longing, and eventual perseverance, as a central emotional register for his abstracted, historically inflected paintings.
