Biography

Kim Asendorf (born 1981, Germany) is a German visual and conceptual artist whose practice fuses experimental strategies with real-time generative systems to create abstract animations, images, and sculptures. Rooted in early net art culture, Asendorf treats the internet itself as his preferred canvas, prioritizing accessibility and open distribution over gallery exclusivity. He is widely known for developing the Pixel Sorting script, an influential open-source image-processing technique adopted by countless digital artists, as well as for treating file formats themselves as artworks. In a characteristically conceptual gesture, he created and transmitted the first animated GIF sent into deep space, "Humans watching Digital Art," extending questions of art, technology, and audience beyond Earth itself. Working obsessively at the level of the individual pixel, Asendorf builds eye-catching, ever-evolving software-based systems that blur the line between static image and living process. His work has been exhibited at major institutions and festivals worldwide, including ZKM Karlsruhe, Eyebeam in New York, NIMK in Amsterdam, the Moving Image Contemporary Art Fair in London, Creation Gallery G8 in Tokyo, Office Impart in Berlin, and XPO Gallery in Paris. Asendorf also works under related aliases and collaborative identities, including ASDF and Monogrid, extending his conceptual practice across multiple creative platforms.
