Leander Herzog

Biography

Leander Herzog (born 1984) is a Swiss visual and generative artist based in Switzerland who has been making images with code since 2006. Trained within the mid-2000s generation of generative artists who learned directly from pioneers such as Marius Watz, Herzog focuses his practice on real-time, web-based animation and interactive abstraction, often exploring the multiplicity and instability of digital ownership within his coded systems. His work frequently references contemporary art history while reflecting on the pervasive, near-omniscient presence of technology in daily life, translating these concerns into restrained, minimalist visual compositions built entirely from code. Herzog's art has been exhibited at major institutions and galleries including Transmediale Berlin and DAM Gallery, Kunsthaus Pasquart, Kunsthalle Zürich, HEK (Haus der Elektronischen Künste) in Basel, and SODA in Manchester, and has entered the permanent collections of ZKM Karlsruhe, HEK Basel, and the Francisco Carolinum Linz. He frequently collaborates with other artists working at the intersection of code and visual art, including Kim Asendorf, Addie Wagenknecht, and Milian Mori, with joint projects commissioned by institutions such as the Whitney Museum in New York and HEK in Basel. Widely regarded as one of the "generative classics" of the field, Herzog continues to refine a distinctive visual language of restrained geometric abstraction, using the constraints of code to produce work that feels both systematic and quietly poetic.
