Masayoshi Nojo

Biography

Masayoshi Nojo (b. 1989, Kanagawa, Japan) is a contemporary artist who completed his MA in Japanese Paintings in 2015 at the Kyoto University of Art and Design. His process begins with photographs of the Japanese landscape, which he digitally manipulates to build multiple detailed layers before transferring the resulting image onto the surface using silk-screen printing, combined with acrylic, silver, and aluminium leaf. The results feel suspended between memory, reproduction, and material presence, as though a digital image file had been filtered through traditional Japanese material techniques and historical visual languages. Nojo's mixed-media works, including his ongoing Mirage series, use this layered process to bridge traditional Japanese aesthetics with a contemporary, image-culture-inflected sensibility, exploring how photographic reproduction and digital manipulation can be reintegrated into a physical, crafted object. He is represented by JD Malat Gallery, which presented his solo exhibition Hone Intuition in 2026 and has shown his work at both its London and Dubai spaces. At Art Dubai Special Edition 2026, Nojo's work was presented by JD Malat Gallery alongside Casper Brindle, Santiago Parra, and Ur Kasin, in a booth exploring the intersection of digital collage, painting, and online culture, with Nojo's practice offering a distinctly material and historically rooted counterpoint within that conversation.
