Singapore-based artist Wenhui Lim reimagining aunties as cosmic, surreal figures through AI, exploring ageing and identity.
Niceaunties is the moniker of Wenhui Lim, a Singapore-based artist and designer who uses generative artificial intelligence, video, and photography to explore ageing, beauty, freedom, and identity. Her work reimagines the everyday figure of the "auntie," a culturally specific archetype across Singaporean and broader Southeast Asian society, as a cosmic, surreal, and joyfully strange protagonist, transforming a figure often overlooked or stereotyped into a site of wonder, humor, and reinvention. Central to her practice is the ongoing Auntieverse project, a growing universe of AI-generated auntie characters and scenes that has expanded into physical exhibitions such as Auntiescapes, extending her digital imagery into gallery installations and prints. The Auntieverse series (2024) has drawn serious institutional support, including backing from collector and advocate Jean Michel Pailhon, and is the subject of an in-progress documentary examining both the artistic process and the cultural questions the project raises about ageing and visibility. Lim's work has been recognized by major AI platforms, including a feature from OpenAI highlighting her project's attempt to understand and celebrate "auntie culture" through a fun, freeing lens rather than a dismissive one. Her practice sits at an unusual intersection of pop culture, generational memory, and technology, using AI to amplify a culturally particular figure into an expansive, affectionate, and visually inventive universe.
