Biography

Nikita Diakur is a Russian-born animator and filmmaker based in Mainz, Germany, known for the self-given title 'ugly filmmaker,' a nod to his distinctive, deliberately imperfect visual style. Born in Moscow, he studied Animation at the Royal College of Art in London, where he produced early work including 'Fly on the Wall,' before establishing an independent practice as a director and producer in Germany. Diakur has built an unusual and widely admired body of work by combining physics-based computer simulation with an embrace of randomness, spontaneity, and failure, using simulated characters and environments that stumble, crash, and behave unpredictably rather than performing polished, controlled animation. His breakthrough film 'Ugly' (2017) established this signature approach, followed by 'Fest' (2018) and 'Backflip' (2022), in which a simulated digital avatar repeatedly attempts and fails to execute a backflip, training itself through countless awkward, physically believable failures. These works have earned him recognition and awards at international animation festivals and exhibitions, and have made him a distinctive voice within experimental and computer-generated filmmaking. Diakur also co-founded KAIMAX Digital, a studio whose work has reached tens of millions of views online. Diakur continues to explore themes of imperfection, autonomy, and simulated behavior across independent films, gallery exhibitions, and digital projects.
