Rafael Lozano-Hemmer

Biography

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer is a Mexican-Canadian media artist, born in Mexico City in 1967, who studied physical chemistry at Concordia University in Montreal before turning his scientific training toward large-scale interactive art. Working at the intersection of architecture, performance, and technology, he creates platforms for public participation that transform urban and gallery spaces into responsive environments built from light, sound, and biometric data such as heartbeats, breath, and voice recordings. Lozano-Hemmer often describes his major installations as 'anti-monuments,' works designed to let members of the public represent themselves rather than commemorate a single fixed subject or historical figure. Among his best-known pieces are Pulse Topology and Pulse Room, in which visitors' heartbeats are captured and translated into synchronized patterns of flickering lights, as well as Vectorial Elevation, a participatory installation of robotic searchlights that audiences could choreograph over a city skyline via the internet. His large-scale, technically ambitious works have been presented at major institutions and public spaces around the world, including the Hirshhorn Museum, SFMOMA, and Superblue Miami, and his practice has made him one of the most prominent figures in contemporary interactive and participatory media art. Through his studio, Atelier Lozano-Hemmer, he continues to develop new participatory installations and to support related community and educational initiatives centered on public engagement with technology.
