Biography

Santiago Parra (b. 1986) is a painter known for constructing entire canvases from a singular, continuous brushstroke, an automatic painting technique in which the composition is built directly in the act of painting itself, without preliminary deliberation or planning. Rooted in Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism, his paintings hold a quiet tension between stillness and movement, with an expressive, calligraphic quality that emerges from the physical trace of the artist's gesture rather than from a predetermined image. This process embraces spontaneity and foregrounds the visible evidence of human action on the canvas, a quality that reads as a deliberate counterpoint to the endlessly optimized, algorithmically generated images that dominate contemporary visual culture. Parra has been represented by JD Malat Gallery since 2018, and his work has been shown at the gallery's London and Dubai spaces, including as part of the exhibition Elements of Light. At Art Dubai Special Edition 2026, his paintings were presented by JD Malat Gallery alongside Casper Brindle, Masayoshi Nojo, and Ur Kasin, in a booth exploring how digital collage, painting, and online culture intersect and remain in active conversation. Parra's practice continues a lineage of gestural, process-driven abstraction, reasserting the value of unmediated physical mark-making within a broader art world increasingly concerned with digital and computational image production.
