Sofya Skidan

Biography

Sofya Skidan is a contemporary artist whose practice spans video essay, glass sculpture, and installation, consistently returning to questions of hybrid ecologies and synthetic bodies. Her Tentacle series merges blown glass, silicone, and botanical elements into forms that read as porous, transparent, and bodiless, continuing a long-running inquiry into mimicry and memory across organic and artificial material. Skidan often treats technology as an extension of the body rather than an intrusion upon it, a distinction that shapes how her hybrid figures are perceived: less as warnings about artificial augmentation and more as explorations of new modes of being. At Art Dubai Special Edition 2026, presented by Dom Art Projects, Skidan showed new video works filmed in the UAE that used AI filters to produce imagery feeling simultaneously local and cosmic, with figures entangled with glass tentacle forms that extend rather than replace the human body. Her work has previously been exhibited by Alisa Gallery in Dubai, where a presentation of six video artworks combined natural found objects, man-made materials, and digitally rendered elements into a single amalgamated visual language. Skidan's practice sits within a broader curatorial context at Dom Art Projects premised on the idea that there is no real divide between the physical and the digital, alongside artists including Michiko Tsuda and Kirill Makarov.
