Software engineer and early AI/crypto artist known as Blackbox, exploring generative systems and decentralization.
Sparrow Read, working under the name Blackbox, is a software engineer, traditional artist, and one of the earliest significant women working in AI-generated art. Combining a multi-decade background in software engineering with a parallel practice in traditional encaustic wax painting, Read approached generative art from an unusually technical and craft-informed position. Between 2020 and 2022, she produced an exceptional body of GAN-based work using her own trained models, participating in foundational collaborative experiments on platforms like Async Art and building a curated presence on SuperRare during the formative years of the AI art movement. Her practice engaged directly with the technical demands of the early GAN era, when artists had to train models on handcrafted datasets long before accessible interfaces existed, and her finite body of work from this period is now considered historically significant, if still under-recognized relative to its place in the story of AI art. Beyond her studio practice, Read contributed to the broader crypto art community's understanding of its own economics, collaborating with data scientists to analyze sales distribution and wealth concentration patterns across the SuperRare ecosystem. Her practice was ended prematurely by illness, leaving behind a compact, focused body of work that captures a specific and consequential moment in the history of generative and AI-assisted art.
