Studio Lemercier

Biography

Studio Lemercier is co-directed by French artist Joanie Lemercier and independent curator Juliette Bibasse, based in Brussels for the past decade. Lemercier's practice centers on light in space. He's worked with projection since 2006 and co-founded the visual label AntiVJ in 2008, collaborating over the years with Jay-Z, Flying Lotus, and Portishead's Adrian Utley on stage design and large-scale architectural projection. Bibasse has worked in digital arts since 2009, first as an artist's producer for a decade before becoming an independent curator and the studio's director. The studio's signature move is escaping the screen entirely, projecting onto unconventional surfaces like water mist or custom-built structures rather than flat digital displays. That instinct is inseparable from Lemercier's personal commitment to environmental activism, which shapes the studio's priorities toward low-tech, resource-conscious production. Their first major monographic exhibition, Paisajes de Luz, was commissioned in 2021 by Fundación Telefónica Madrid and has since traveled to Mexico City, Lima, and Arequipa. In 2024 the pair co-founded Solar Lab, an open research project exploring energy and light in connection with the sun and wind. In March 2026 they crossed the Atlantic on a sail cargo vessel rather than flying, collecting ocean and wave patterns along the way as part of that research.
