Botto is a decentralized, autonomous artist brought to life on October 8, 2021, by German artist and machine learning pioneer Mario Klingemann alongside a team of engineers and collaborators. Rather than being directed by a single human creator, Botto operates as a semi-autonomous AI system whose neural network, trained on millions of images, generates thousands of new artworks every week directly from its latent space. What sets Botto apart is its governance structure: a global community organized as a DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) votes on their favorite fragments and finished pieces, and this collective feedback continuously retrains and reshapes the model's aesthetic direction over time.
