Biography

Stelarc, born Stelios Arcadiou in 1946 in Limassol, Cyprus, is a pioneering Australian performance artist raised in the Melbourne suburb of Sunshine, internationally recognized for using his own body as the primary material and site of his art. For more than five decades, Stelarc has visually probed and acoustically amplified his body through an extraordinary range of extreme performances, exploring the boundaries between the human body and technology. Between 1976 and 1988, he completed twenty-five body suspension performances, in which his body was suspended in the air by hooks pierced through his skin, works that confronted audiences with questions about pain, presence, and physical limitation. Stelarc later became known for his exploration of prosthetics and cybernetics, including the creation of a Third Hand, a robotic extension controlled by his own muscle signals, and his celebrated Ear on Arm project, in which a cell-cultivated ear was surgically constructed and implanted onto his forearm, permanently altering his own anatomy in the name of art. His work interrogates what he describes as the body's status as an obsolete structure in an age of increasingly capable technology, using robotics, prosthetics, the internet, and biotechnology to extend, amplify, and reimagine what a human body can be and do. Stelarc has performed and exhibited extensively across Japan, Korea, China, Europe, and Australia, and his work has been the subject of continued academic and curatorial attention, including major retrospective presentations such as the 2020 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art and the recent documentary Stelarc: Suspending Disbelief exploring his life and legacy. Held up as one of the most radical and influential figures in body and performance art, Stelarc continues to challenge conventional understandings of embodiment, identity, and the future of the human form.
